Mostly we see gemstones that involve straight edges and flat faces to enhance symmetry and brilliance. Another cut also exists which is equally beautiful but less popular, it is the cabochon cut.
Cabochon stones
A cabochon gemstone is that gemstone which is without any shape and polish. Therefore, this gemstone does not appear geometric and sharp, it looks more rounded as well as smoother.
"Cabochon" word is derived from the "Caboche" which is a French term, means head. Recent days, the stones that are cut as a cabochon are regarded to as cabochon gemstones. These gemstones include turquoises, moonstones and opals.
Benefits of a cabochon cut
Almost every gemstone can be converted to an opaque cabochon gemstone but these tend to be less popular when compared with the faceted gemstones. Especially in case of opaque gemstones, the main motive of developing the cabochon cut is to make the gemstone appear denser and fuller, but not to make it appear more brilliant.
The unique properties of some gemstones get only visible when they are cut in cabochon. These include the following gemstones:
·Asterism – sapphires and rubies produce a star-like effect produced by rubies and sapphires
·Chatoyance – this is also called the cat’s eye effect which is produced by quartz and some other stones
·Adularescence – Moonstones and some other stones produce a milky, bluish lustre
Iridescence – it is a process of changing colours gradually which depend on the perspective stones like opal
When a gemstone carries imperfections or is translucent, Cabochon cuts are preferred to retain its colour. It obscure dirt or scratches that appear on gemstone's surface.
Cabochons gemstones are alternative to the faceted gemstones, that increase the density and size of the stone and highlight its unique effects as well.
